What Are the Best Supplements for Skin Elasticity?
Skin elasticity — the ability of skin to stretch and return toward its original shape — depends on more than collagen alone. Collagen and elastin provide structural support, while hydration, barrier function, UV exposure, and oxidative stress all influence how resilient skin remains over time.
Collagen peptides have some of the most direct human evidence for improving measured skin elasticity, but they are not the only nutrients studied. Specific oral ceramides, astaxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin, and a standardized red-orange extract have also demonstrated elasticity-related benefits in human studies. Other antioxidants and photoprotective nutrients may support skin by helping defend against oxidative and UV-related stress that contributes to loss of collagen and elastic fibers.1–5
What Supplements Can Support Skin Elasticity?
The evidence points to three complementary strategies: supporting the skin's structural matrix, supporting hydration and barrier function, and helping defend skin from environmental stress.
1. Support Skin Structure: Collagen Peptides
Collagen peptides are among the most studied oral ingredients for skin elasticity. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, women taking specific bioactive collagen peptides showed significantly improved skin elasticity compared with placebo.1
A separate placebo-controlled study of 2.5 g of VERISOL® daily found increased levels of procollagen type I and elastin after eight weeks, alongside a reduction in eye-wrinkle volume.2
These results apply to the specific collagen peptides studied. Collagen source, peptide composition, dose, study population, and outcome measures vary across products and trials.
2. Support Hydration and Barrier Function: Ceramides
Elasticity is not solely a collagen issue. Skin hydration and barrier integrity also influence how supple skin looks and feels.
Oral wheat-derived polar lipids containing ceramides have been studied in women with dry or aging skin. Human trials of specific wheat polar lipid preparations have reported improvements in skin hydration, transepidermal water loss, smoothness, roughness, and measured elasticity.3
As with collagen, these findings are ingredient-specific and should not be generalized to every supplement marketed as an oral ceramide.
3. Help Defend Skin From Oxidative and UV Stress
UV radiation and oxidative stress contribute to skin aging in part by affecting collagen, elastin, and other components of the extracellular matrix. This makes antioxidant and photoprotective nutrition another relevant part of the elasticity story.
Astaxanthin has human clinical evidence for skin elasticity, moisture, and other skin-aging measures. A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials found significant improvements in elasticity and moisture with oral astaxanthin, while also noting limitations including relatively small studies and heterogeneity among trials.4
Red Orange Complex®, a standardized extract of Sicilian red oranges, has also been studied in a randomized, double-blind controlled trial. Daily supplementation was associated with improvements in measured skin elasticity, hydration, radiance, transepidermal water loss, and wrinkle depth, as well as increased antioxidant capacity and reduced UVA-induced lipid peroxidation.5
Lutein and zeaxanthin have human research examining skin elasticity and photoprotective outcomes, while Polypodium leucotomos has human evidence supporting resistance to UV-induced skin responses.6, 7
Other nutrients—including vitamin C, EGCG from green tea, lycopene, grape-seed proanthocyanidins, and selenium—participate in collagen biology or antioxidant defense. Their relevance should not be interpreted to mean that each has independently been proven to increase skin elasticity when taken as a supplement.
Why a Multi-Pathway Approach Makes Sense
There is no single biological process responsible for loss of skin elasticity. Structural proteins change with age, cumulative UV exposure contributes to extracellular-matrix degradation, oxidative stress can damage cellular and structural components, and changes in barrier lipids and hydration can affect skin suppleness.

Can supplements tighten loose or sagging skin?
No supplement has been proven to physically tighten significantly loose skin. Some nutrients have evidence for improving measured elasticity, hydration, or wrinkle appearance, but those outcomes are not equivalent to physically tightening excess or lax skin.
What vitamins help support skin elasticity?
Vitamin C is required for normal collagen synthesis and functions as an antioxidant. However, the fact that a vitamin is essential for normal skin biology does not mean taking more than an adequate amount has been proven to improve skin elasticity. Evidence for correcting a nutrient deficiency should also be distinguished from evidence for supplementation in well-nourished adults.
